WHAT INFLUENCE DID THE EAGLES HAVE ON MODERN COUNTRY MUSIC?
When people talk about the history of modern country music, the Eagles may not be the first band mentioned. They were generally considered rock or country-rock rather than traditional country. But listen closely to modern country music and their fingerprints are everywhere.
The Eagles helped prove that country storytelling, vocal harmony, acoustic instruments, electric guitars and rock production could all live together in the same song.
COUNTRY AND ROCK MEET IN CALIFORNIA
The Eagles came out of the Southern California music scene of the early 1970s, alongside artists and songwriters such as Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and J.D. Souther.
They weren’t the first musicians to mix country and rock. The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Flying Burrito Brothers and Poco were already exploring that territory.
But the Eagles took the mixture to an enormous mainstream audience.
Songs such as Take It Easy, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Tequila Sunrise, Lyin’ Eyes and Desperado demonstrated that a song could have strong country roots without sounding like traditional Nashville country.
That idea would eventually become extremely important to modern country music.
THE HARMONIES
One of the Eagles’ greatest influences was their vocal sound.
Those tight harmonies became part of the blueprint for countless country groups and artists that followed.
Country music had always used harmony singing, so the Eagles certainly didn’t invent it. What they did was combine those country-style harmonies with the precision and production of a major rock band.
You can hear that same philosophy throughout modern country music: a strong lead vocal, carefully arranged background vocals and a chorus that becomes bigger when the harmonies arrive.
The Eagles didn’t invent harmony singing.
They helped modernize it.
SONGWRITING CAME FIRST
Another connection between the Eagles and country music was storytelling.
Don Henley, Glenn Frey and their songwriting partners understood that listeners remember characters, situations and emotions.
Lyin’ Eyes isn’t simply a song about an unhappy relationship. It creates characters and an entire world around them.
Desperado uses the image of an outlaw to say something much deeper about a human being.
Tequila Sunrise paints loneliness without explaining every emotion to the listener.
That’s very close to the philosophy behind great country songwriting.
Show the listener something and let the listener feel the rest.
THEY HELPED MAKE COUNTRY SOUND BIGGER
The Eagles also demonstrated how country roots could be surrounded by bigger drums, electric guitars and polished studio production without destroying the story at the center of the song.
That became increasingly important in country music.
By the 1980s and especially the 1990s, country records could compete with mainstream rock and pop records while still containing acoustic guitars, fiddles, steel guitars and country storytelling.
Modern country has taken that idea even further.
Today’s country records can contain huge drums, distorted guitars, synthesizers, loops and pop production techniques.
Underneath all that production, however, there can still be a simple story about love, leaving, drinking, regret, family or trying to get back home.
THEY HELPED REMOVE THE FENCE AROUND COUNTRY MUSIC
Perhaps the Eagles’ greatest influence wasn’t a particular guitar sound or harmony.
It was proving that the boundaries between musical genres didn’t have to be permanent.
A rock listener could enjoy a country-flavored song.
A country listener could enjoy a rock band.
A songwriter didn’t have to choose one musical box and stay there forever.
That sounds remarkably familiar today.
Modern country regularly borrows from Southern rock, pop, blues, folk, Americana and even hip-hop.
People argue today about whether some of it is “real country.”
But people have been arguing about what qualifies as country music for generations.
The Eagles were crossing those musical borders more than fifty years ago.
THE VINCE GILL CONNECTION
There’s an interesting ending to the story.
Vince Gill became one of the most respected singers, songwriters and guitar players in country music. After Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey died in 2016, Gill eventually joined the Eagles’ touring lineup.
Think about how that brought everything full circle.
Country music helped influence the Eagles.
The Eagles helped influence the development of country-rock and eventually modern country.
Then one of Nashville’s most respected country artists became part of the Eagles themselves.
THE EAGLES’ LASTING INFLUENCE
The Eagles didn’t invent country-rock.
There were important artists before them who helped create it.
But the Eagles took that combination to an extraordinary commercial level.
They demonstrated that country storytelling, rock guitars, strong melodies, harmony vocals and polished production could reach an enormous audience.
That formula never disappeared.
It evolved.
You can still hear pieces of it throughout modern country music: big choruses, layered harmonies, acoustic guitars beside electric guitars, conversational storytelling and the willingness to borrow sounds from outside traditional Nashville.
Modern country didn’t come from one artist or one musical movement.
But somewhere in its family tree, there’s a California highway, an acoustic guitar, four-part harmony and an Eagles record playing on the radio.
And that road eventually led straight back to Nashville.
