The Story Behind “40 Lbs of Ghost”

Some songs start with a melody. Others begin with a single line that refuses to leave you alone. “40 Lbs of Ghost” started with an image of a man carrying around everything he can’t let go of. Not a physical weight, but the kind you carry inside—the memories, regrets, losses, and old mistakes that follow you wherever you go.

The title became a way of describing emotional baggage. We all know someone who looks fine on the outside but is carrying years of disappointment just beneath the surface. In this song, those ghosts aren’t monsters. They’re old loves, broken promises, missed chances, and the people we’ve lost along the way. They’re always there, adding a little more weight with every mile.

As an outlaw country songwriter, I’m drawn to characters who aren’t perfect. They make bad decisions, live with the consequences, and keep putting one foot in front of the other. That’s what “40 Lbs of Ghost” is about. It’s not a song asking for sympathy. It’s about learning to live with the past instead of pretending it never happened.

Like much of my original country music, this song is rooted in real emotions rather than easy answers. Everyone carries something. Some people just hide it better than others. “40 Lbs of Ghost” is for anyone who’s ever felt the weight of yesterday but kept moving anyway.

I hope listeners hear a little of their own story in this song. If it reminds someone they’re not the only one carrying invisible weight, then it has done exactly what I hoped it would.
